ABOUT ECWCD
MISSION STATEMENT:

East County Water Control District's mission is to manage, protect, improve and preserve the natural resources within the District in a fiscally responsible manner.

Who is ECWCD?

In 1845, Florida came into the Union. At that time, one of the major questions was whether Florida could be drained to be made usable for urban, industrial and commercial purposes. East County Water Control District was created on May 5, 1958. It encompasses over 63,000 acres of land and approximately 311 miles of canals. ECWCD is a political sub-division of the State of Florida and is funded through the collection of an acreage tax.

WHAT ECWCD DOES

The conservation and management of our community's water resources are two prime responsibilities and challenges of your East County Water Control District.

Today your District works tirelessly to ensure that our homes, schools, businesses, public facilities and private and public properties are safe and free from flooding. But modern water management also focuses on proper planning to provide the quantity and quality of surface and sub-surface water resources for the current and future residents of our growing community. That means that your District is responsible for both the discharge and recharge of our water resources to maintain a balance between flood control and conservation.

To achieve that critical balance, your District maintains a network of canals, water control devices, structures, and systems, including natural eco-systems that improve water quality, and provide a viable habitat for wildlife and recreational opportunities for our residents.

The District is a "political sub-division of the State of Florida" and is funded through acreage assessments on all parcels within its boundaries.

Your District is governed by a five member Board of Supervisors who are elected by the registered voters of the community. These Supervisors, who are elected by seat and run on a non-partisan ballot in the regular biennial election, serve four year terms
